Topic of Module: Classroom Observation and Educational Focus
Date: January 10th, 2014
Presenter(s): Rosalind Kennedy-Townsend and Debra Walls
Summary: This module gave us an honest glimpse of the role of the principal and the many ‘hats’ he/she must wear. It also focused on leadership support and feedback for teachers, as well as teacher evaluation and the process of walk-throughs and other evaluation methods.
Reflection and Application: I was interested to learn about the many methods of teacher evaluation and I am most impressed with the PLC collaborative model that has pre and post discussion with teachers and observations based on specific identified goals. I also like the idea of teacher self-evaluation and choosing goals through discussions with the principal. I will keep the resource binder provided close, since it has many great samples, checklists and forms that can be used and adapted.
The readings for this module that referenced the ‘juggling act’ and the ‘many hats’ of the administrator were eye-opening, to say the least (I was tickled by the nurse, fireman, traffic cop and jester references;)). The responsibilities of an educational leader are demanding. I have learned over the years that fixing my personal and career goals on making a difference in the lives of children is the most rewarding and satisfying thing that I can do. Educational leadership is the next step in my journey.
